Were there any BR&P loco's listed? And YES! There on page 50 is a reference to BR&P #53, a Consolidation built by Baldwin in 1891. Now numbered as 1722, Mr. Hungry Wolf described the engine as "derelict" at that time. Did she have a Belpaire firebox like A&A #8, or like the Twelve-Wheelers? Unfortunately, Mr. Hungry Wolf didn't say. And what are the chances of the engine still being around a decade later? Probably not too good.

I have a photo of 1722, dated 1982. It was apparently taken by a James Hutzler of Aleandria, Va. The engine is quite derelict - No tender, no smokebox front, sand dome, side rods, main rods, air pump etc. Essentially a 2-8-0 hulk, with a boiler, cab, wheels, and cylinders. It does not have a Belpaire firebox, by the way.

Interesting looking Mogul. Anybody happen to know the heritage of the thing? I'm assuming that the A&A purchased it second hand. Even with the Belpaire firebox, it doesn't look like it's of Pennsy heritage. But perhaps I'm wrong. Les

And for the link to the A&A locomotive roster which shows that there was a sister Mogul on the A&A roster; number 7. I should have remembered the BR&P as a possible source for locomotives with Belpaire boilers. I recall reading one of Tom Lawson, Jr.'s "From the Steam Locomotive Archives" columns that used to be in the old THE SHORT LINE Magazine. Tom talked about Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh 4-8-0's in that particular column and even mentioned that some BR&P steamers had gone to Cuba, including some of the Twelve-Wheelers. That got me to thinking so I pulled out my copy of TRAINS OF CUBA by Adolf Hungry Wolf , a little paperback book that has a pretty good listing of engines at the various sugar factories, at least as they were in the mid-90's. More data: BR&P 53, BLW 12317 of 1891, built as a Vauclain compound, last reported at Julio Reyes Cairo mill near Jovellanos, Matanzas, derelict in 1997, and none of my UK friends have been able to find her. Hey, at least we gave up looking for the long-lost Huntington & Broad Top Mountain 4-4-0 #25.............
