Recently noted an article in a British publication, dated September, 1935, by Charles S. Lake, author of "The Worlds Locomotives", 1905. In this article he documents the construction of an 0-4-0T built by Baldwin for their use as a shop switcher. This engine was automatically fired (designed to be single manned) and employed roller bearing driving boxes. (An in house experiment?) The notes do not include much technical information, but records the boiler as burning oil and able to maintain pressure in 3 to 5 ranges-----automatically! I am prevailing on your collective knowledge to find out if there exists any other record of this locomotive. Thank you, Dave Griner Arizona Mechanical Engineering |

We had one of those locomotives at the Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum not to long ago It has been moved to the Connecticut Eastern Railway Museum recently The one we had was oil fired. For more information contact the Connecticut Eastern Railway Museum or the locomotives owner. (I think the locomotive was running up to the 1970's)

David, I have a link to a the text of a speech from someone at Baldwin that says quite a bit about that engine (cheaper to operate than diesels, etc.). Unfortunately it's on another computer I don't have access to tonight. I'll try to remember to post the link tomorrow night. |

David, Here's the article link: http://yardlimit.railfan.net/baldwindie ... index.html Article info: "Muzzle Not the Ox That Treadeth Out the Corn" BY ROBERT S. BINKERD vice-President, The Baldwin Locomotive Works From an address delivered before the New York Railroad Club, New York City, on the evening of April 25, 1935 from 1936 Baldwin Locomotives Magazine It's sort of long and rambling, but it finally gets to details about the engine in question several pages in. |

Hi Dave: Two of these locomotives survive: former Standard Steel Works Nos. 10 (BLW c/n 61820) and 11 (BLW c/n 61945. No. 10 as noted above is back in Connecticut while No. 11 continues to languish at French Lick, IN. There is a photo of No.10 in "The Steam Locomotive Directory of North America". No. 10 was still set up for one man operation while it was here at Essex with the firing controls mounted adjacent to the brake stand. The firing controls weren't the sort you usually see on steam locomotives. It had a small valve in a housing with a little handle/selector on the top of it. The firebox of this locomotive was in exceedingly poor condition with extensive cracking on the rear tube sheet and throat sheet knuckles as well as side sheets and crown sheet. We thought breifly about trying to get it running until we knocked out the fire brick, removed the tubes and did a thorough inspection. At the time, my guess was that it had been badly abused and routinley "overfired". I never inspected No.11, the last time I saw it, it had a tender/watercar with it. Hope this helps! J.David |
