WHAT is that green and white diesel on the rear? It sure isn't 8408 or 114......

That's the SW900 #915, under a three month lease from the Everett Railroad. (See link for engine's history)

From what I've heard, Wilmington & Western is leasing 915 to give the older SW1s a rest, along with testing to see if it fits the railroad's needs. If it does, then it'll hopefully be bought and maybe get some needed blue paint.

I'll take responsibility for the rather hideous paint job presently on the 915. Recalling the snappy green 70 tonner that the Baltimore & Annapolis once had, I tried for a green version of our black & white loco scheme. About halfway through the job I decided 1) there was more body work to be done before the painting could be finished, and 2) I didn't like the green paint I had selected. The loco subsequently departed for the Knoxville Locomotive Works where it received significant repairs and a considerable amount of rewiring. I offered the W&W a choice - I'd arrange to paint the engine (B&O blue this time) and they could pay to ship it to Wilmington, or I would pay the freight and they would give her a paint job. They took me up on the latter offer, so I expect it will get dressed up when they have time to tend to it.

Alan,
I have enjoyed 915 working on our trains and the horns
have kept us on our toes. That is if you are in the first coach.
Love the history of the locomotive as well. The current paint
scheme has received many questions and of course comments
as folks try to figure it out.

One thing I would like to mention is how dedicated the folks at W&W have been. They faced having their line wiped out twice my monster floods and were able to put together the support to get it rebuilt and improved. Additionally they have upgraded shop and passenger facilities and managed to pull of a major rebuilding of our beloved #98. They are one of the oldest and best run historic rail organizations. Adding 915 to the fleet is just another example of how dedicated the people at W&W have been.

I agree. My first visit was almost 40 years ago, on an RDC special from Washington - I think it was a fund raiser sponsored by the National Capital Trolley Musuem.

W&W (and WK&S) proves that you don't have to be big to be successful. It is a spit-and-polish operation with the good fortune of being surrounded by a highly scenic enclave in the middle of a populated urban region.



Eric, I don't care for single note honkers, so I bought a Nathan P3 for the 915. I haven't heard it myself, but if it's too much, I'll take 'em back and find something more subdued.
