Looking for a source of 1/2" dia. Elevator Bolts, also known as flat head carriage bolts. Finding these in 1/4", 5/16", and 3/8" is fairly easy but I'm striking out in 1/2" diameter.

I know for sure That style of bolt is used to mount the cutting edge on a Cat dozer blade. You might want to talk to the parts department of a heavy equipment dealer such as Cat, John Deere etc.

Actually aren't dozer blades mounted with plow bolts or bucket tooth bolts? They are similar to elevator bolts but have a smaller-diameter head.

About a two years ago we had searched the internet unsuccessfully for 1/2 X 4" elevator bolts. I inquired at the local Ace Hardware store about 9 AM, they ordered them, and I picked them up that afternoon! I assume they could still get them.

McMaster-Carr has 1/2" elevator bolts (screws) in several lengths. See 92670A861 and other part numbers at www.mcmaster.com.

Six dollars and thirty-three cents for ONE bolt? Are these made out of titanium… or platinum?

Seriously, there have to be other sources, after all the railroads are still putting wood decks on some flatcars, and I can’t believe they use 3/8” bolts.

You might expand your search terms with ”flat head carriage bolts”, “deck bolts” and “step bolts” although the later might have been a descriptive term confined to the transit authority I once worked for.

Try Wayne Nut and Bolt in Detroit MI.

They have a large selection to square head hardware and may have the larger elevator bolts.

Correct, those are Plow Bolts.

The IRM purchased what I think you need in 2006 and 2007 for restoration of the wooden deck and siding on a Rock Island transfer caboose. You can purchase the bolts from Lewis Bolt and Nut Company, 1550 Wayzata Blvd., Ste 611, Wayzata, Mn. Phone 952-449-9830 or 800-328-2480 and FAX 952-449-9607. The bolts which have flat heads and work like carriage bolts are called Sealtite bolts by their company. They have many diameters, including what you are looking for, and many lengths available. They are priced very resaonably, as long as you can use what they have in inventory.
