With all of the concern and limitations on aircraft in the airspace near/over venues, NBC Sports didn't inform us that they would be covering the run (for sure) until just a day or two before the event. Judging from the repeated passes and varying angles of the helicopter as we made the run, I'd love to have a tape of just the 'raw' footage. We (at Heber Valley Railroad) were led to believe that the coverage of the run would appear on NBC's 'Today Show' the following morning -- but anyone who has experience with media knows that what actually goes on air or into print is at the 'whim' of an editor/director. You may see the footage in a filler piece during Games coverage, it may end up in a "Best of the 2002 Winter Games" video, or forever lost on the cutting room floor. It was interesting to see the local NBC affiliate's coverage on the news that night -- it consisted of a brief (2-3 seconds) shot of the train arriving at Heber and the news anchor mentioning that the torch "also traveled by train" that day. On the other hand, ABC's local affiliate had a reporter and photographer on the train, interviewed the HVRR's director, and put together a couple of reports that aired on their early and regular evening news. Hi Doc; I have been watching for news coverage of the HVRR; the only thing I have heard on the tv was a whistle. I'd expect TV crews to put it in as filler somewhere; they always seem to do segments on the local "environment" at slow points. How are the passengers doing? People taking the train? Busier or quieter than expected? Any hassles so far? I'll be down doing whatever John Rimmasch wants me to do from the 18th-24th.
