The roundhouse and turntable at the Wilmington, DE both stand waiting for demolition. Several photos can be found at the Forgotten Delaware website linked below. They also have some photos of former Reading and Pennsylvnia bridges found in the Wilmington area.

Thanks Tom,

Saw that one from the train several years ago. I assume this was a steam roundhouse and had nothing to do with the electrics? Was it once larger in size?

Before the Northumberland days, PRR D16sb 4-4-0 No. 1223 and E2 4-4-2 No. 7002 were stored on an interminent basis in the PRR Wilmington, DE roundhouse during the late 1930s through the early 1950s.

Kurt,

I have seen a photo of 1223 stored in Wilmington but I am not sure where I saw it. Check out the Reading Car Float bridge on the same site.

Dear Tom,

Is that half-sunken steamship still moored in the bay outside Wilmington? What is the story with that? Just curious!

Kurt,

You are talking about the Wilson Line "State of Pennsylvania". She was cut up about 10 years ago when the whole waterfront redevolpment was getting underway. It is a real shame that we lost her. The stuff lost in my lifetime makes me sick.

Does anyone know if the turntable is still in the "pit" at Wilmington?

Bennett,

The pit is filled in, I would think they removed the bridge first, but ya never know...
I can ask around.

By the way, VERY nice E's! Hope to make the trip in April.

There was a second PRR roundhouse in Wilmington, an older wooden one, at street level along the East side of the passenger line, between Wilmington and West Yard. It was torn down less than ten years ago in the redevelopment of that area.

The Reading Company (W&N) roundhouse was in service, three stalls minus turntable, until Conrail came in. It was on the West side of the AMTK (PRR) passenger line South of the old PRR roundhouse.
