I am a longtime reporter at the Boston Globe, off now writing books. My current project, for Henry Holt Publishers, is a book on the Pullman porters and the role they played in everything from black trade unions to the Civil Rights Movement. I am traveling the country, talking to porters who still are alive and scouring library collections for any material on the Pullman sleeper cars and the men who worked on them. Do you know of any porters living anywhere in the country, or have any suggestions of individuals or groups who might help me look? Mr. Tye, You might try speaking with the railroad artist Robert West. His grandfather was a Pullman porter for the Atlantic Coast Line. He visited with his grandfather during the time he worked as a porter and riding the trains he worked on. Mr. West is a very nice man and I'm sure he would welcome a call or an e-mail from you. Contact the B&O Railroad Museum. They have a program every year featuring retired Pullman Porters during Black History month. This year's program will be held this coming Saturday (2/16). I believe the A. Phillip Randolph Archives sponsors the travelling exhibit for a fee. It has a fairly long waiting list. We hosted the exhibition in 1999 at Strasburg and it consists ofa few free-standing panels with a video presentation. K.R.
