Hello:
Does anyone know the current state of a Baldwin diesel switcher DS 4-4-1000 that was located at Waterloo, Indiana and worked at the DeKalb County CO-OP ?
Thanks in advance for any information

I can share some stories/rumors I've heard about this locomotive (originally Detroit Terminal 103).

Supposedly the grain elevator has been bought by the Andersons, and they have acquired an EMD switcher from Relco to replace the Baldwin. The 103 was last reported to be stored there, currently out of service. I have also heard that it may have a cracked block. Can anyone verify this information?

unit was still running a year ago or so when we serviced it last. No cracked block then. I heard it went to a Museum in IN. I was told not the Whitewater (by the Whitewater) That's all I've heard.

Jack -

We had some on-again, off-again, conversations with various folks at the elevator. But the last we heard is that the unit was being sold by them to SMS. That was some time ago. We are definitely NOT the museum in Indiana that received it.

I found this photo taken last month. The same panel that is cut off this side is missing on the other side. (Scrapper's doing?) I also heard the offer SMS made was turned down, but that wasn't confirmed by their people I know.

I have confirmed that SMS did not hear back after making their offer. So they are not the new owner.

Anyone know what happened to this unit? Is it still at the elevator in Waterloo, Indiana or............?

Thanks.

When I was there in the summer of 2011 it had some parts pulled on it by the person who was the mechanic for this engine. If memory serves me correct some brake rigging batteries and something on the block. It had beautiful wheels on it and rebuilt traction motors. The impression I got was that the elevator was making money on it parting it out. They were open to other offers on it. The reason it was sidelined was because there was coolant water mixing with the oil. Other than that it appeared to have been well maintained until it was parked.

I got an e-mail tonight saying that the Baldwin ended up being scrapped. Sad end.

Thanks for the update (and last word) on DeKalb 103. When my wife and I were driving across the US in June 1990, I spotted this unit at work and parked along the roadside to get photos. This was near Butler, Ind. Sad to hear that the old Baldwin finally got scrapped, but maybe the parts will keep other BLW products running for a while longer. And it did outlive probably 95% of the locomotives built by Baldwin.

Here is the last photo I took of the DTRR 103 as I was on my way home last spring after visiting NKP 765 during her prep for the NS Steam trips. Sad to see her go. I do know MANY groups contacted Bunge about her, but according to some the Owner wouldn't part with her for a reasonable price to make her able to save. And as we all know there would have been no way she could have been interchanged with the friction trucks.
