I'm sure the Erie fans have been lusting for this ever since Conrail assigned its 4022 to "Executive E" service in the late 1970s......

Freshly repainted, and presumably mainline-ready, steam-generator-equipped Erie 833 debuts at the New York & Greenwood Lake at Port Jervis, NY yesterday. Photo by Carl Perelman of Railpace Newsmagazine.

Sandy, you are a bit late!

ELDCPS had the honor and pleasure of having 833 and NY&GL's passenger equipment participate in our Fall Foliage excursions last year:

And yes, that was all the same weekend -- snow, rain, and not-a-cloud-in-the-sky sunshine! Something for everyone ;^)

OK, so I read too much into Carl's photo captions.

So, are they (and the ELDCPS) keeping the steam heat?

Can't speak for NY&GL, but at last check, she did have her steam generator as EMD intended, albeit deactivated.

As to ELDCPS, all of our owned equipment is or will be HEP/generator powered for operational flexibility.

I've always wondered about the small bug deflector looking device on this E above the headlight. I've never seen this on any other hood units.

I know someone on this forum can tell me what this is for. Is it original? Did it work? Did any other railroads use them?

Thanks!

The 2 URHS E's up at Lebanon, NJ have them too. They are also undergoing restoration by Star Traks, who did the Erie 833:

What is the heritage of this unit? Could it actually be a real "E-L" E unit?

I was around when 833 was a commuter engine and it or
at least other EL E's had it .

Original? Well, no. They apparently were added after the EL merger.

Rob

Got it. Thanks. It is strange they weren't used on F units.
