Friends--

I need your help tracing an article. I have a strong memory of having read a very good article by John H. White, Jr. (Smithsonian curator or transportation emeritus and all-around Towering Figure) in which he applied a version of the Department of the Interior Standards for Historic Preservation to railroad rolling stock--in particular, to try to nail down the difference between stabilization, conservation, restoration and replication in a railroad context. I think this was in L&RP.

Ring a bell to anyone? Can you give me a citation?

Thanks,

Erik

Yes, it was L&RP, and the title was "Facadism: Is this Really Preservation?". L&RP #15, July-August 1988.

Oh, does that ever seem so long ago....

An earlier piece on the topic:
John H. White, Jr., "The Railway Museum: Past, Present, and Future," Technology and Culture 14, no. 4 (Oct., 1973): 599-613.

Thanks, Keith--this is a big help, too. Much obliged to you.

Does anyone happen to have a copy of that L&RP article? Being a historic preservation major I'm interested in seeing how it differs from the regular standards.

Thanks,
Kevin

Don't know what Pentrex's lawyers would have to say about the copying of a complete article--copyright law and all...but a copy of the whole entire issue mentioned can be purchased for three dollars and shipping at http://www.railpub.com.

The usual disclaimer...I have no interest in the above referenced link other than being a satisfied customer in completing my collection of L&RP issues.
