Frank,

Any responses to your list of missing streetcars on the database?

Wesley
-----------

The cars in the table below have been identified as having existed in a state of historical preservation at some point in the past, but cannot be identified in any existing collection. Some of these cars have probably been scrapped or otherwise lost, some are probably still in existence, and some may simply be erroneous listings from some roster published in the past. Cars are listed sorted by location, i.e. the last state or country in which they were known to be located. Information on these cars, regardless of their disposition, is actively being sought. Any and all leads are appreciated; please contact Frank Hicks at fullparallel@wideopenwest.com with any information.

Thanks for asking! I've gotten a few responses, which have been extremely helpful - and interesting. Here's what I've gotten so far (I'm on the road so this is from memory):

Los Angeles Railways 9352 line car - I've traded a few e-mails with another RyPN-er to correct and complete information on this car as well as the LARy single-truckers owned by Travel Town... stay tuned on this one...

Twin City Rapid Transit 1496 - scrapped c2006

Key System 169 rapid transit car - got a report that this car was sighted at OERHS in Glenwood, OR as late as 1964

Most of the equipment on the "mystery list" hasn't had any information submitted yet. Thanks again to all who have e-mailed information on the "missing cars" and on other equipment in the PNAERC database!

I've received more information over the weekend:

Cincinnati & Lake Erie 637 and Lake Shore Electric 39 box motors - still in existence on private property (Buckeye Lake Trolley)

Key System 169 rapid transit car - scrapped 1977

A few more "mystery" cars from the Preserved North American Electric Railway Cars have been accounted for. The first is Lethbridge Municipal Railway 8, a single-truck car preserved in Alberta. This car is actually still around! The body was restored c1980 and put on display at the Galt Gardens Museum until it was removed in 2004 and put in dead storage. The car was outside that whole time and had deteriorated significantly but there is a group now working to re-restore it. The second new "solved mystery" is TTC 4138, which was removed from the Duke of York School in Toronto for scrapping on May 29, 1974.

Remaining cars that reached preservation status but then disappeared are listed below; any info would be appreciated!

According to the Canadian Trackside Guide (which is a must-have in any reference collection), CN 6741 is owned by Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions in Stettler (along with CN 6740, 6744 and 6747). Don't know if this helps...

Agreed, Steve. The Canadian guide is astonishingly good, year after year. I know it has help some US pieces be repatriated just by letting guys know they still existed.

It would be a great undertaking for someone to produce a US version.

I apologize for the "necro-posting" but this is pretty much a follow-up on the "missing electric cars" thread from a while back. Updates have continued to trickle in on the streetcars listed on the Preserved Electric Cars roster site as "missing in action," i.e. equipment that was preserved at one point but can't be found at the moment. A few more have been checked off the list:

Georgia Railway & Power 704 (flat motor) - confirmed scrapped, had apparently been damaged by the Southern in a switching accident
Lake Shore Electric 39 (box motor) - confirmed still in existence (body only), privately owned and located in Homerville, OH
San Francisco & Napa Valley 52 (interurban) - was cut down to the frame, apparently in the late 1970's; remains still at Dunsmuir Railroad Park
St. Louis Public Service 1031 (streetcar) - confirmed scrapped

Remaining cars that reached preservation status but then disappeared are listed below; any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Post subject: Speaking of Missing Streetcars...
PostPosted: Fri Dec 19, 2008 9:02 pm

Hi,

Lately I have become very interested in Cincinnati curved sided interurbans, especially the later ones as built for the Indianapolis & Southeastern and Dayton & Troy.

The ones that made it to Speedrail were burned (I&SE 200, 230, 235, 240, 245, 260, and D&T 201, 203). Dayton & Troy 202 and 204 were destroyed in scrapping of the Lehigh Valley Transit in 1949.

So, 205, 210, 215, 220, 225, and 255 remain to be accounted.

3 (210, 215 & 225) were used for parts on the Intercity Rapid Transit. Does anyone know if the bodies were sold for cottages?

2 (205 & 220) went to Beach Groove Transit. Might there be a chicken coop with a I&SE heritage?

I&SE 255 went to Georgia Power. Does anyone know if the body was sold for a cabin or if it was burned and scrapped.

Thanks,

Charles

Frank,

I think and the boys from Seashore should be able to collaborate, but I think that the MBTA motor flat was scrapped.

Ted.

Heh! Hey, those are pretty neat photos. What is it? My guess is a Wason, possibly converted from a deck or RR roof judging by the wood siding. Holyoke Street Railway perhaps?

OMG, how did the streetcar get there? Some sort of terrible GG1 4876 type falling through union station incident?

or did some railfan stash it in his garage?

If I'm thinking this is what I think it is, it is a Holyoke, MA Street Railway Car. So, yes it is basically someone shoving it into their garage, but it is well preserved. I have been to the location, and I have spoke to the owner and he is adamant about preserving it. Even if he doesn't restore it, he doesn't want it to deteriorate from sitting outside. He also doesn't want it to go to a museum that will just put it outside under a tarp. Yes, we museums have a bad rap for acquiring things and leaving them outside. This is why people do not wish to bring their treasures to us for other people to enjoy. Yes, the car is hanging off of an edge, but the car is structurally sound. Personally I wouldn't want all that stress on the body, however, I suppose it is better having that stress on the body and being inside rather than being out in the elements.
I know that some of you will want to know where it is, but, out of respect for the owner, I will not be giving out that information, as I am sure he does not want to be inundated with phone calls or visitors to see this car.

We at the SFTM really need another trolley car so I am going to try to get this one.
