I saw this on railpictures.

Note the steam dome is a large pipe flange. I guess forming a traditional steam dome is not being done anymore.

The steam dome design makes great sense! To have the full I.D. of the dome must make it GREATLY easier work on the throttle valve and to get in and out. I have long thought that new boilers built (in this country) should have that design.

I've worked on some small European narrow gage industrial steamers that had the dome connection down towards the bottom of the dome. The throttle and associated linkage was accessable from all sides with the majority of the dome removed. I wonder if there are engineering challenges involved in having the dome rather than just its top removable that would make it inconvenient in larger adaptations?
