Sort of like Junkyard Wars on a greater scale...teams scrounging for parts and funding to restore locomotives. Yeah, you could make it a winter event if you were a real sadist.

The only difference I can see is that you would be getting recognition for what you were doing and a medal and then maybe our friend with the dump car could take the afforementioned medal and have it machined into new bearings for the said dump car. This is all based on the premise that his team won or that one of our fellow railroaders took pity on him and donated their winning medal.

One of the combined events for this could be the Vitamin A Abatement Combined - Removal and Decon. You could get suits that look very much like the ones the speed skaters wear.

There could be different classes of the Mechathalon, Switcher, Geared, Light and Heavy Main Line. So as not to leave anybody out this they could include Steam, Diesel, and Electric.

Locomotives, locomotives, locomotives. How about the Car Department??? I suggest: #1- Plain Bearing Repack Event, and #2- the C.O.T.& S. Event. Speed, cleanliness and accuracy count equally, as does keeping all your fingers intact.

#1- Plain Bearing Repack Event.

With pads disappearing, I'd like to sign up for a training course for this event. Is it a Bring Your Own Waste Event or do we use official Olympic sanctioned and advertised product???

How about:

"Driving Box Grease Celler Repack In The Snow? It must include:

Doing a driver which is under the air compressor (that has leaking steam side packing).

It must be on an outside frame NG hog with the !@#$%^& counterwieght in the way.

(by using an outside frame engine, the TV coverage would be better than trying to watch through the driver spokes).

Points to be awarded by:

Use of colorful language.
Amount of hot water down one snowpacked neck.
Dropping the wedge or pedestle binder on ones (or a team mates) frostbit toe - extra points if you get a finger, even more for an ungloved frozen hand.
Amount of cellar grease left on ones bibs, face and hair.
and of course boring stuff like speed, accuracy (packing the correct box).

Its most fun when you leave the cake of cellar grease out in the snow for a couple hours first.

Is this an event suggestion, or just a bad flashback? :-)

I think he needs another ROTARY run, followed by a couple of days of Scholl freight charters to make him happy, eh Craft!!!

Would that be the U-12 and 16-inch cylinder weightlifting event, or the D-22 lightweight event, or the 12-wheel clasp-brake brake-shoe relay?

As one who has long considered competitive sports an incredible waste of time, money and effort, there is some merit to all of the above. Were I in charge of schools, for instance, there would be things like classroom cleaning, snow shoveling and lawn mowing to give students exercise, in place of gym class and football. Seriously though, the railroad I work for now once held carbuilding contests among rival carshops on the system. Teams from different towns would compete to build a wooden boxcar the fastest...

Is it any wonder then, that our society is mirrored in Bob Vila ads for tools with no particular purpose ? You know, "cant be bothered using the correct tool? Here, use this hemaphrodite plier-wrench-hammer thingy...you cant use more than about 10 foot pounds of torque on it but that's OK because you cant muster that much power out of your Playstation-honed arms anyways.

A two-parter-- basic 4-axle freight car, AB valve and 10" cylinder would be the first round to eliminate the lightweights. The main event would of course be a full-up 12-wheel, 18" cylinder, UC valve heavyweight Pullman gut-buster. And, don't skip the slack adjuster!

I think the perfect event would be to take two park hulks of the same class (I guess that means an NKP berk!) and have two teams compete to see who can get their engine under steam, under code, and up to "Amtrak" specs first.

The winner gets to Haul the New River Train.

Hey, we can dream, right? ;)
