Trains has a report on the newswire about the LM&M tourist operation in Ohio seeking bridge repair funds, or threatening to move to another line if repairs are not funded.

http://www.trains.com/trn/default.aspx?c=a&id=4487

That prompted me to look up their website, and lo and behold yet another LNE survivor is roaming the rails west of PA. A gonnie that is also set up as a cab car. I am sure that is the only LNE cab car around!

So for LNE buffs, that makes one S-2, one 0-6-0 and one gondola to repatriate to PA from the lower Great Lakes states. We'll deal with the caboose in CA later. ;-)

As I recall the Valley Railroad has a L&NE Gon they used to use as an open car, now it is only used for special events like film-shoots and the like.

Yes, there are LNE gonnies at Essex, CT and Kempton, PA... a hopper at the RRMofPA, boxcars (off trucks) at New Hope and a covered hopper in the Adirondacks. Other than cabooses and business car #100, are there other LNE pieces around?

There's a steam locomotive out there too, but can't remeber where.
This is out of a book I have on Steam locomotives

Lehigh & New England 207 Image
Builder: Baldwin Locomotive Works
Year Built: 1936
Wheel Arrangement: 0-6-0
Length: 66ft 4in
Width: 10ft 6in
Height: 14ft 10in
Weight: 183900 lbs
Brakes: SA2 Independant
Tractive Effort: 44200 lbs
Cylinders: 21x28
Boiler Pressure: 215 psi
Drivers: 51in

The gons at Wamaker Kepmton & Southern , they have three and they have a flat car and a bobber caboose.

Lehigh & New England caboose #512 is a four-wheel "Bobber", built by American Car & Foundry. The car was part of a six-car order from ACF built around 1914 or 1915.

The Lehigh & New England numbered most of their non-revenue cars in the 700 series. Car #719 was rebuilt from a box car around 1932 or 1933 and was used in wreck service as a tie car or a boom car. The box car from which #719 was rebuilt was likely built sometime from 1908 to 1913 during a period that the LNE purchased 1100 new box cars. Car #719 has a steel underframe and a wood deck.

Lehigh & New England gondola #10381 was built in 1934 by American Car & Foundry. It features a steel underframe, steel dreadnaught ends and steel truss sides. The floor and sides are wood planked. Once a general purpose freight car

The remaining two cars (#729 & 730)

Gon#10390 Three Rivers Rambler that operates on the Knoxville & Holston River Railroad in Tennessee.

I think we've determined that this wood caboose, located in a backyard in Winchester, MA is an L&NE survivor. Unfortunately the owner, while expressing to me (in person) the desire to sell, has ignored all formal contact and correspondence toward that end. Time is obviously running out for this one.

I was going to say something about the LNE bobber caboose that was up on the RYPN Classifieds for the past week or so, but it is gone now. I think it was listed as for sale for around $17,000. If I recall correctly, the location was in or near Oneida in New York state.

Since this topic has been brought up again, Ill mention that the caboose in CA is not a real L&NE caboose, but a replica with reproduction L&NE running gear(copied from the gear at RRMPA under the rebuilt LV cab). It's basically a potting shed on wheels. There are however at least 4 surviving real L&NE bobbers.

So noted...

With the S-2 being scrapped, #207 is the last known LNE locomotive still extant. By far, the cabooses out number any other LNE survivors. There appear to be 15 cabooses left, and about 7 revenue frieght cars... along with business car #100.

I wonder whatever happened to the LNE caboose in Winchester, MA? Not a bobber, but one of at least 6 two-truck wood LNE cabooses known to survive into the 2000's (mostly in New England, as a bunch were sold to the B&M).

Of note, the running gear under the LV cab at RRMofPA was under the LNE tunnel car, which apparently was originally a bobber.

The caboose in Winchester, MA (next town over from me) is still there. I met with the owner a couple of years ago and spoke with him about it. At that time he said he had been trying to sell it for years. He "seemed" quite interested when I assured him I had an interested party with means, willing to extracate the car from his property.

I passed all contact info along to this well-known organization, they reached out to him, (twice I think), and he simply never responded.
