PA Trolley Museum gets solar energy state grant.

Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Inc. -- $271,391 to install 36 kilowatt solar energy system. The system is expected to produce 44,150 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, avoid air pollution associated with smog and climate change, and conserve approximately 214,200 gallons of water.

There is additional information on this development in an item in Flimsies posted on 1/31. PTM is currently negotiating for a second solar array to be installed on the roof of our original (1958) Carbarn #1. The press release speaks glowingly of "solar powered trolleys." Well, in theory, yes, but in the real world the energy produced will be consumed for the most part by interior lighting of the two buildings. Nevertheless it will produce a significant saving for the museum, one of whose major budget items is electric power. PTM has also installed a sophisticated power management system designed to prevent our overall facility from peaking the demand meter the wrong way and causing a huge increase in power charges as a result of one 15 minute period of high demand. Anyone interested in seeing our state of the art rectifier substation and the rest of this power management scheme is invited to visit PTM.
