Post subject:  ALCO HISTORICAL & TECHNICAL SOCIETY
I am pleased to announce that the Alco Historical & Technical is now accepting memberships.
Our Goal is to open a Alco Museum within the City Of Schenectady, NY. We will need persons who will serve on various committees to round out our group.
We are now working towards becoming a Non-profit 501(c) Society. We still have a a lot of work to do on this.
Feel free to contact me off list and I can send you an application for membership.
We have 4 classes of membership. We can use all the help we can get.

Tell us more about the classes of membership, cost and benefits. I am with the SVRy. We operate one of the only two new locomotives spec'd by the original SVRy, #s 19 & 20, and they are Alcos from Schenectady.

We currently have 4 classes of membership:

Regular membership (Individual) $35.00 per year

Family Membership (2 or more persons) $50.00 per year

Life Membership (1 time payment) $1,000

Corporate ( Large Donation and/or Monetary Gift) This applies to any business railroad or non-railroad.

I would like to see one more class allowing Historical Groups,educational groups,etc to allowed to join as a ""group Membership" Still have to work on this.

As far as Benefits; There will be a newsletter for everyone. Only Regular, Life and Family members will be able to vote and (NY members only can)run for office.

Do you have a website up and running? It would be good to have a website with information such as: mission, artifact/assets you have now, future plans, and activities.

A couple of thing I am wondering... Is this the same organization that owns the Alco builders photo collection? Do you plan on owning/operating rail equipment? Will the museum be an interactive type museum or more of a research facility?

Not yet. We hope to do that once we find someone with Website building skills.

There is NO connection to Alco Historic Photos(which has the photo collection)
If we get a site, we will have Locomotives on display. We plan to make it a interactive type museum.

Can you write up some simple versions of your plan and post it here for the time being? I am very interested in the group.

Is the group going to try to save some of the Alcos near the Arsenal? CP wants them OUT, OUT, OUT.

Also, are there any tracks remaining to get into the old Alco property?

Most of the Alcos in CP's yard are owned by a M&H Chapter member. We have little in those since they are more common. However ,we are eyeing some rare electrics which are in Glenmont. Its really too early to talk about equipment until we have a place to put them. The Alco plant still has a tracks going up to the property but otherwise is disconnected from the main line. We hope to take a closer look at that later this year.
We will post a plan once we finalize it.

There are no ALCO blueprints, they were all burned by ALCO in the late 1960's.

All except for those that were owned and preserved by individual RR's (very few).

I should elabroate;
There are a few (very few I'm told) of what are called "erecting cards" (ALCO Historic/ Mohawk NRHS has them). They are basically an overall "assembly drawing" also known as an "As Built" drawing) showing the entire locomotive and it usually has cross-sectional views. They are useful in creating small scale models, but they are lacking most every detail and are only somewhat useful in building accurate model reproductions like large-scale livesteamers.

The individual part drawings, like the; driver center, lead truck, boiler, cab, rods, etc.. those are all ashs in a pit behind the old Schenectady plant.

That's why the Baldwin collections are so valuable, they are all we have left of the biggest companies steam locomotive efforts.
