Flying Scotsman in the News

The National Museum in York is seeking funds to finish the restoration of the Flying Scotsman. As a side note, I did not know that she held a record for the longest non-stop run for a steam locomotive.

Did you know that she is the only steam locomotive to travel around the world?

After she did he famous tour around the United States and Canada she was shipped to Australia and then after that tour back to england by way of the Red Sea, thus completing a complete circle of the globe.

Nope. She never did travel "around the world" in that one-loop sense. She was shipped back directly to Britain in 1973 from San Francisco via the Panama Canal. The Australian trip was Sept. 1988- Dec. 1989, going and returning via the Cape of Good Hope.

Either way I think she is the most traveled locomotive. It's good that she is preserved and being kept up. I missed her when she toured the US. Maybe I'll see her run one day in England.

I wonder if it would be possible to pull off a "world tour" with a locomotive in today's atmosphere. Even a national tour like a Freedom Train seems almost impossible. But even back in the 70's it was not easy and only done with the right supporters and sponsorship.
