Here are a couple of photos of what looks like a well cared for 4-8-2. http://www.flickr.com/photos/38628255@N ... otostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/38628255@N ... otostream/ Without cover she must get pretty regular attention. |

She looks a lot better than she did last time I saw it about five years ago. The feed water heater is fake though. It was missing for several years. Somebody fabricated a dummy. 6015 is owned by the Canadian Railroad Historical Association and is on indefinite loan to I assume the town of Jasper. It replaced 6060 which was on display in approximately the same location until it was put back in service by Canadian National in the early '70's. |

This gives me some hope that dummy Elesco feedwater heaters could be fabricated for the DM&IR 2-10-2's at both the St. Louis and Green Bay museums. Both of these locomotives had theirs removed and they look drastically different than their later day "in-service" appearance. Les |

I found a shot on the web of 6015 taken several years ago in its original location in town and with the feedwater heater missing. She looked a little rougher back then.

Actually she's missing more then just the Feed Water Heater Bundle. When I saw her back in 2002, I noted she was also missing the feed water pump, mechanical lubricator, and numberboard lamp. Joe |

She came from the Delson collection when placed as a substitute in Jasper. This leads me to assume/believe her missing mechanical parts may be in use or substitutued elsewhere. A nice shed roof would be a positive addition. |

Actually, the DM&IR removed the feewater heaters on both of the 2-10-2s late in their service career. They also removed the boster engines, so both locomotives are correct for an in-service appearance. It's just not the in-service appearance a particular person likes. |

David - That MAY be true, but I have my doubts. There is a photo on page 25 of David C. Schauer's "Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway In Color" book that shows #506 in service pulling ore cars on May 2, 1959. The Elesco is still very much in place at this very late date in operational steam on the railroad. And in the late Frank A. King's "Locomotives of the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range", Mr. King has photos of #506 on a railfan special near Hibbing, Minnesota. Although there is no date of the special, Mr. King describes it as being "during the waning days of steam on the DM&IR". And yes, the Elesco was still there then too. It's possible that the Missabe might have removed the Elesco's at the end, but I have never seen a photo of any of the 2-10-2's that had them, in service with them removed. It is also possible that the DM&IR might have disconnected the feedwater heater at the end when the engines were in service, but left the very visible round hardware portion in place in front of the smokestacks. In my mind, the more likely scenario is that the items were just removed when the railroad donated the engines to the two museums. If someone comes up with a photo of either engine in service with the Elesco's gone, I will certainly change my opinion. Les |
