Post subject:  Jim Jeffords on rail transport

The tiny state of Vermont made history a while back when its Republican senator, Jim Jeffords, quit the party and became an independent, upsetting the balance of power in Congress. Always an independent in spirit, Jeffords has long been an advocate of rail transport and Amtrak, the environment, etc., and I thought some readers might be interested in a year 2000 statement he issued concerning reestablishment of Amtrak service on the North Bennington line of the old Rutland Railway. Thanks to his help, the track is nearly all repaired (it hadn't seen passenger service since 1953)and the train should begin soon. See what he wrote below.
