Don't know for sure, but it looks like a USATC S100 to me:

Indeed it does but not listed here either....

http://www.project62.supanet.com/locolocation.htm

What is listed here though makes interesting reading as it states four locos from Mittal steel have been sold back into Bosnian National Railway Service in 2009!

This locomotive showed up in Goldfield in June of 2008 and became the subject to a discussion on the Nevada Shortline (nvshortline) Yahoo email group. It turned out to have been a parts locomotive at California State RR Museum.

One of the responses was posted by a volunteer at CSRM
Quote:
It was used for parts on the Granted Rock No. 10 that we use on the
excursion train. It was built for the US Army around 1942 (that is the
date on the 10). It's in very poor shape, the tires are groved real bad
and other parts missing. Good luck.

I asked my contact (also in June, 2008) at the CSRM who was responsible for finding homes for much of the excess collection, etc. He wrote back:
Quote:
It is US Army Porter 0-6-0T #5014, acquired by CSRM as a parts source (especially injectors) for the restoration of Granite Rock #10 (US Army 5001), donated by CSRM to the mueum in Goldfield to be restored for static display, and moved there last month.

I happen to have out right now the book Allied Military Locomotives of the Second World War by R. Tourret. Three builders (Devenport, Porter and Vulcan) built 382 of these locomotives during the war. 5000-8 were Porter S/N 7560-8 from 1942; 5009-12 were Porter S/N 7483-9 also from 1942; 5013-27 were Porter S/N 7490-7501 from 1943.

Hope this helps.

Its interesting to see the other photos in that persons collection. One says the "Bullfrog and Goldfield Railroad Yard" ... another few show an wood bodied coach and two different hi-rail cars made from 1920s sedans. The making of an interesting rail museum. Maybe they should get the Tonopah side door caboose (like the old Ambroid kit) which is on the ground in Rhyolite.

If this is the one that came from the California Railroad Museum, it may be one of the two porters that came from Kentucky. These were in service as late the mid 1980's at Tombstone Junction along with M&NF (ex Union) #14/77 now at the Big South Fork Scenic Railway under restoration.

The last I knew of the other Porter, it was at the Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, KY.

JD - According to the list above, this is WD #5002 and once worked at E. J. Lavino in Virginia. Porter serial number is 7462, built 8/42. Is this engine owned by KRM, or by a private party who just keeps it there?

As someone who looked at both Porters at Tombstone in 1988, I can say that they were not in service into the late 1980's. From a discussion with the on-site management, a gentleman named "Glenn", those two both came from Lavino at Reusens (sp?) sometime in the late 1960s. One of them was re-tubed and ran briefly circa 1970. It was discovered that the combination of steep grades and sharp curves limited what one could pull. The conversation also led to a look at the paperwork in the files at Tombstone. The search revealed that one of them, I think #5014, had been delivered to the "Cressona Ordnance Depot" in Cressona, PA. This is the old Alcoa plant site, for those who know the area.

Both locomotives were listed for sale by DF Barnhardt back in 1987-1988 time period. Our inspection revealed severly bent main rods on one of them, with odd strips welded to the outside of the center of the rod, perhaps a stiffener? The running gear appeared to very "tired" to say the least. One had no grates and looked like someone was getting ready to perform firebox repairs. Both locomotives were pretty much complete, having Sellers non-lifting injectors, twin 9-1/2" air compressors, gauges and whistles. Oh, and the builders plates were still mounted on the cylinder saddles. There had been some modifications for use a Lavino with extensions mounted on the coal bunkers, an odd bracket with a light attached towards the stack, and some strange piping on the front end. I know I took photos of some of the "oddities".

We looked over #77 then. She was a brute of a locomotive and actually looked like it belonged there. I can recall an electrical blower attached to the front, supposedly to help "draft" the locomotive while it was being fired up. The "enginehouse" consisted of a small, wooden structure, maybe 8' X 8', with "stuff" scattered about. It was a very interesting place to visit.
