Where are some funding sources that could be used for funding large projects?
I talking building and land purchases.

I see more and more places talking of bequests in people's wills. Something new, which I have not seen before, is the donation of stock. This allows companies the chance to participate without a direct outlay of cash. I have noted that getting your local state reps to sponsor a "railroad historical heritage" license plate is good move, although the will of you state house is often mercurial, at best. Talking to High School student councils, particularly in those schools which have used your museum for field trips, is a good idea. Often schools have service learning projects for high school students as well. Don't underestimate the drive of a motivated student who needs these credits to graduate. Hit the VFW, Amer. Legion, Kiwanis, and any other civic minded agency with roots in your community. Not everyone hates the railroad!

Oh, there's also that widow of the former General of some Kingdom in Africa, who wants to share 70% of her stolen wealth with you.....or didn't you get the email?

Don't forget your county or city, particularly if they have a "Bed Tax" for tourist development. If your museum is creatng a destination for tourists. Even though they may have limited budgets they can be a good partner.

Don't let the "non-profit" bit be too much of your thinking. Your museum is a business. "Non-profit" is a relationship between the museum and the IRS and controls how the business is conducted.

First, let me say that I am no expert but in my opinion there are dozens of ways to raise funds. Secondly, many organizations don't shake every tree.

Some of the more common funding sources are:

Admission Fees
Excursions
Gift Shop/Snack Bar
Memberships
Private Donations
Government Grants
Foundations

I think the question to ask is what other trees are there to shake? If your group is not shaking the foundation tree then find someone to show you how. If your gift shop is really weak find one that does well and see what they are doing.
