Gentlemen:

I've got about $50 to spend on a book for my birthday, and I wondered if any of you had any recommendations. Steam content is mandatory, and the more technical, the better. (I already own a copy of Wardale's book "The Red Devil...".)

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,
Hugh Odom

Hugh,

One of my favorites is Ed King's "The A - Norfolk and Western's Mercedes of Steam". Originally published in 1991 though, so I'm not sure about current availability. Nicely technical, but still tugs at your heartstrings. Very enjoyable reading.

We didn't reprint that one, Adam Harris at Camden in the UK did. We imported a few copies of it and it quickly sold out. I have been out of stock on it for about five months but Adam just sent me another Couple of dozen, about ten of which are already spoken for. I think that Goodheart has the rest of Tom Lindsay's stock if he hasn't sold out. The book is fabulous, but it is a big chunk of a book and quite hard to handle and expensive to ship. If you are looking for steam locomotive technical stuff the Home Study Set is pretty hard to beat. We have just done "Locomotive Practice I & II" from 1927. It is quite a bit less expensive than the home study and is really quite good.

Ken,

What ever happened to your magazine "Steaming Up!"? I subscribed, but I think I only got ~3 issues.

Thanks,
Hugh
