Post subject:  Surviving World Steam Project Update

Back in October, my survivingworldsteam.com domain came up for renewal. I have been sick for a few years, but I was at a low point healthwise at the time; my wife's hours had been cut, and I was facing a possible job loss.

So, I let my survivingworldsteam.com domain go unrenewed, and as mentioned in Robert McDowell's PSA (reason #1 I am posting this); my domain was snapped up by an Internet troll. So, my website has been offline since then.

The Surviving World Steam CDs have been in need of a major overhaul anyway. The code was written in VB 3.0, and database in Access 2.0. That means it is 10+ years old, and 16-bit (read Windows 3.x) code. It will still work on 32 bit versions of XP, Vista, and most likely Windows 7; but not the 64 bit versions. I also used Neato brand products for my labels and inserts; they were the only game in town back them; but Avery has since edged them out; so the CD packaging needs to be redone. Plus; all of the steamships shown the Surviving World Steamship packaging have since been scrapped!

So, my website needed some time off; I need to investigate what my options are for upgrading the project, and whether it will be worth it. (I was only selling 1-2 CDs a month; and possibly due to an error on my part, hadn't sold any in several months prior to October.) But what I really wanted to save was the Surviving World Steam Lizard Photo Gallery. It was a free, ad-free gallery of steam pump photographs; my contribution to the preservation world that is still unmatched.

I am pleased to annouce it is now back online (reason #2 I am posting this.) You can access it at:

http://www.steampump.org/gallery

And now that it is back up; here is the nameplate I mentioned in another thread, with a drawing that may illustrate what the original steam pump looked like (reason #3 I am posting this.)

Thanks for looking.

Good luck with all of this but is it really appropriate to sell products at a not inconsiderable price and then ask an additional $12.95 for the user guide?

If you have ever used one of my databases before, I think you will find that a users guide is really not needed. I have only sold 21 in the ten years it has been available on the web; as opposed to over 300 CDs to date.

Very little of the software you purchase nowdays comes with a printed users guide anymore; it is either a .pdf document or on the web. I just offer it for those who want one.
