DR wrote: It's rusting away in Branford CT. DR - I saw your statement that New Haven Trap Rock #38 is "rusting away". Got me to thinking that maybe wearing #38 wasn't very good for a preserved steam locomotive. Isn't Sierra Railroad 2-6-6-2 #38 sitting in pieces somewhere? And HOD's Woodward Iron 2-8-0 #38 wasn't in very good shape when last I saw it either. Is there a steam engine numbered 38 somewhere that IS in good condition? Les |

I think H&BTM 2-8-0 #38 would be considered in "good hands", having recently been acquired by an owner who is going to take good care of her. Howard P. |

LIRR G5s, #39 is being rebuilt at Strasburg (at least the boiler is). It was numbered #38 for 20 years while displayed, as her original number plate had been given as a gift to Brooklyn Dodger's catcher, Roy Campanella. Today, the Campanella family has no idea of what happened to the original 39 number plate, and the RMLI has no idea of what happened to the original, but swapped, #38. When rebuilt, #39 will wear a facsimile Keystone #39. (sigh) |

IIRC, NHTR 38 is not just rusting away. A few years ago, I talked with the owner who is the son of the last engineer of her, and current owner. The engine is complete, protected and maintained on his property. As I have not seen her, I am not sure of the extent of the protection and maintenance, that is just how he worded it. Howard - I had forgotten about this #38; the H&BTM Consolidation. I seem to recall that she was in that fire at the K&K so certainly should be in this list of engines with this particular number that are not in good shape these days. Hopefully your statement that she is now "in good hands" will mean a restoration for this particular number 38. Another steam #38 I forgot about is a Davenport 0-6-0 tender engine that once worked for the Gulf Pulp & Paper Company up in Canada. I admit that I have no idea as to the current status of that particular number 38. Les |

Regards, Rich C The owner was booted off the property a couple years ago. The 38 has been rusting away since. :( |

Well if it needs a home I don't think the people at the Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum would complain. |

Where is this locomotive located? I might want to go take a look at it. |
