Salt Lake's new light rail system was put to good use during the Olympics, which makes me wonder if there are plans to eventually operate historic Utah trolleys or interurbans on the system, as in San Francisco and San Jose.. Is the overhead suitable for trolley poles? Is it 750 or 600 volt? What is the status of the old carbarns that were rehabbed into retail and entertainment some years ago?

The old SLC car barns are still 'retail and entertainment' and going strong. The development is called "Trolley Square".

Part of the problem with a plan to operate historic Utah trolleys in Salt Lake City is that there are hardly any left. There are only two or three complete cars still in existence from Utah, all of them interurban cars - and none of them are within 500 miles of Salt Lake City. The Western Railway Museum in Rio Vista, CA has a trailer from Bamberger and a gorgeous parlor car from Salt Lake & Utah; Orange Empire in Perris, CA has a "Bullet" car from the Bamberger. Except for a few bodies in and around Salt Lake City, that's pretty much it.

Orange Empire also has the body of a Salt Lake City car that went to San Diego during WWII. We carry it on our list as SDERy 1003, but it is a former Salt Lake car. The car is a body only. It had been used at a "frog farm" that was taken for a freeway right-of-way.

Heber Valley Railroad also has a trailer car from the Bamberger (currently serving as a 'antique' portrait photo shop for a local photographer) --nowhere near the condition of Rio Vista's SL&U parlor car (IMO).
