All, a couple of photos of No 9's new code boiler arriving at the WW&F Ry Museum's shop building at Sheepscot.  prepping the boiler outside the Boothbay Ry shops for the 15 mile trip to Alna...  Passing through downtown Wiscasset... (it's true, each lobster roll at "Red's Eats" contains more than one whole lobster!)  Long time member Ken Maguire looks down from the 2nd floor as the trailer is backed into position for unloading. Last time outdoors for a while! |

How have they solved the design problem with the original frame where buff and draft were taken up by the original boiler? Any pictures? |

Congratulations to all on this momentous project. I was impressed with the idea of a preserved Sandy River Forney way back when the Trains magazine article came out in the 1980s. We're all glad to see the restoration of it and the WW&F. I would bet we could count on our hands, the number of new (good) boilers for preserved locomotives made in the last 50 years. That is a trend which will obviously need to increase over time, if the interest in steam locomotion remains the same or better. |

Hi David, the large u-shaped piece you see in this CAD image, very similar in design to that arrived at in later years by the Portland Co., has been cast and is being machined at Sheepscot now. This piece connects the front and rear frame and eliminates the firebox/boiler from the equation.

In Looking at the pictures of the firebox wrapper sheet staying pattern there appears to be no radial staybolts and lacking this style of staying there also appears to be no diagonal stays across the top of the crown sheet connecting the unstayed portions of the wrapper sheet. I know of another boiler that was constructed without radial staybolts that had to have diagonal stays added to correct this problem. The workmanship through appears very good. |

Stephen- Very cool photos, especially the FEM (finite element modeling) image of the frame from the CAD program. Impressive to see that this level of detail has been employed for the design. Thanks for sharing. |

Dennis, I noticed the same area of design in the boiler, and I know the boiler you are refering to tht had to be corrected. Am I wrong to assume that the WW&F is not under the FRA? If they are not, then the boiler does meet ASME in that area and that should be plenty good enough for the state. I rather like the use of flixible bolts throughout the crown. Also, at the top front of the side sheets there are 3 flexi's...that was where bolts were breaking on the "other" boiler without cross stays. Very Nice Work!!! Jason |

The WW&F Railway Museum is not currently under FRA, but we anticipate that it may happen some day. As a result, our boiler builders consulted with the FRA during the construction of the boiler. |

I assume the lower end of the firebox sits within the new frame member. Looks like the lower row of staybolts and washout plugs would be covered up-tough to maintain? Also, is the new member welded to the old or fastened mechanically? |
