Thought some might appreciate this photo of a Seaboard light decapod pulling a long passenger train. This is the same type of locomotive a few of which are preserved in Georgia, and also a twin of Strasburg's No. 90 and the one at Mid-Continent.

I don't think SRR 90 is a Russian decapod, is it? The best looking of the ex-Gainesville Midland locos is preserved at Spencer (the 206). TVRM had Atlanta Chapter's #203 on display for years until it went to Duluth (approx. 1965-1990). The original plan was to use it for excursions out of Chattanooga on SR and/or L&N(!) Luckily #4501 came along and interceded.

While often mistaken for one another, the Baldwin light decapods are a different animal from the Russian decapods. The Baldwin light decapods were built in the 1920s for shortlines and Class I railroads with lightly laid track; while the Russian decapods were built in during WWI and in slight modified form during WWII. The Baldwin light decapods have different demensions and a different outline from the lighter Russian Decapods, which were built to Soviet loading guage.

All of the locomotives mentioned are Baldwin light decapods. SRR (ex GW) 90 had it's smokebox extended so it could burn lignite.

For a description of both groups of locomotives, I recommend the "Guide to North American Steam Locmotives" by Kalmbach publishers. Russian Decapods are on p. 176, Baldwin "Standard" Decapods are on p. 351.

See the two air hoses? That decapod has a signal whistle installed and is a Passenger Engine!
