Recently, a streetcar carhouse was torn down in Montreal. Might this have been it?

The carbarn in the picture has to be St. Denis. The one that was recently demolished was St. Henri, located at was is known as The Glen (as in the CPR yards). The 18 PCC cars operated out of St. Denis and were used exclusivley on the "Outremont 29" route. The Springfield car in the middle is signed "Millen", a route on PRW in the north end of the city. Montreal had very few double ended cars, so to have two out of three in one picture in rare. The Millen line at this point had lost its south end turning facilities due to highway construction and required double end operation. The Montreal North route which was an extension of the Millen route, was a single track operation with a passing track in the middle. They always used double enders for some reason. By this date the only other double end operation was a short hop into a race track that had a loop at one end only.

With Montreal's historic old section, plus its nutso traffic, it always seemed a ripe place for a historic trolley operation on closed off streets. Has this ever been discussed? Does the carbarn in the photo still exist?

Sorry, I can't enlighten you ony either of those questions. I was hoping someone from Montreal would pick up the thread. I should add that the trackwork from the St. Henri carbarn was recovered and they plan to use it in the Exporail project (www.exporail.org). Montreal simply paved over most of the track and it has come back to haunt them whenever they tear up a street! The transit authority website is www.stcum.qc.ca, for what it's worth. Neil Robertson
