A contractor is restoring the former street railway shelter located on the north end of the US Capitol grounds. The shelter dates to the 1880s and was first served by cable cars. Here are two images of the new copper roof.

The building where common sense goes to die.

Sure wish I had known that this little structure was there when the wife and I visited Washington and Baltimore last year. I would have grabbed a photo or two of it. It shows that we could use a guide of where railroad artifacts are located. There is a guide to railroad museums of course, but something like this wouldn't be in any publication. And there are many other railroad structures or pieces of equipment or artifacts that probably just aren't listed anywhere.

The shelter was removed in the early 2000s to make room for construction of the new underground Capitol Visitor Center. It was only recently reconstructed within the last month. You did not miss it last year.

And that is the problem with trying to build a database of stand-alone artifacts like this. They get moved, they change hands, they get torn down; all more often than you might think. And out-of-date information is only a little better than no information; it does give you a trail you can attempt to follow.
