2101 in the good ole days

Sorry, Tom. You cannot start a RDG 2101 thread until the current PRR 1361/STEA thread has run its course.

As the saying goes, "something this evil never dies".

On a lighter note, am I the only one that feels a bit nostalgic for that paint scheme ?
Plenty of uproar back in those pre-internet days about such an "outlandish" paint scheme, but it's not 1/2 bad, given the prism of how many years now ??

Don't want to start a moderators' feud, but I didn't like it 30 years ago, and I STILL don't like it on a steam engine. I've made my peace with Chessie colors on GP38 #3802 in the B&O Museum, but that is not the color scheme God intended for a RDG T1.

In an ideal world with money as no object I would paint her every few years and switch off between AFT, Chessie, and RDG. Those were amazing times with big steam romping on the mainlines, fallen flag boxcars roaming the rails, cabooses, old heavyweights still in work train service, manned towers, and leftover steam infrastructure still found everywhere. Boy I wish I took more photos!

That paint scheme was designed essentially by the folks at the railroad and as it was their dime and their birthday celebration I'd say they had every right!!

As non traditional as it was I thought the whole train looked pretty nice.

On a current note I have begun the conversation with the folks at the B&O museum to get her repainted (as AFT 1) soon. More on that later.

I'd rather see her as RDG 2101, but blue paint is better than the sorry state shes in now.

As long as we're talking AFT schemes,, as beautiful as the Daylight is in orange and red,, I've always thought the AFT scheme was beautifully done as well.

One of the things that got to me when I saw 2101 a couple of months ago were all the messages written in the dust on her tender. Some were dates people saw her in steam, many were messages about her condition. It is obvious people care about this loco, and seek it out when they are there (you almost have to, they have her almost hidden in the back rows). It is a rea shame, wish they would send her someplace more fitting, someplace where she would be better cared for.

Funny you’d post this as the other day I was thinking of posting photos of pretty much the same thing. I saw 2101/AFT1 in Baltimore for the first time in 11 years a few weeks ago and got photos of all the scrawled messages people left in the dust and fading paint. Most of it actually was from train fans, too. I almost missed seeing this engine as I was told in the museum that it was in the restoration bays somewhere. But in fact, it’s sitting sandwiched between other equipment facing the parking lot.
