I come from a town where the 1890s train station was knocked flat in 1961. There are quite a few historic railroad stations left on the Long Island however. So I got to thinking does anybody have and idea how many S tation Museums are there in the United states?

Reading the Flimsies I see that a great many of the articles are about station preservation projects.

Down in Southern California the City of Perris has a dandy of an old station which closed its passenger service years ago. But now the building has been niicely restored to be used as part of the commuter rail operations out of Riverside and beyond. They will also host the trains from the Orange Empire Railway Museum.

So it seems some of the small town stations have come full circle!

It would be nice if there was a comprehensive list of station musems. Perhaps there is and someone will tell us where to find it.

On another note...sometimes stations have to bee moved to be saved. We have moved 2 to the Heart of Dixie RRM in Calera, AL. On is the L&N Woodlawn, AL Depot from the east side of Birmingham. It is now our train ticketing/boarding depot and the freight area contains museum displays. Another is the Southern depot from Wilton, AL, west of Calera. It is used as our museum library. Unfortunately, the original Calera depot did not survive.

At your service, ladies and gentlemen:

http://www.rrshs.org/

Database of ALL "significant" extant historical RR structures, including towers, roundhouses, bridges, etc. (incomplete and in need of occasional updates or compilation):

http://www.rrshs.org/Struct.index/strucindex.htm

Database of station museums (I went checking this for some pretty obscure examples, and found them included):

http://www.rrshs.org/depotmuseums/depotmuseum.htm

Might I suggest inclusion of these in our links or FAQ's?

Thank you, Mr. Mitchell. One thing I like about this place...If you pose a question someone usually has an answer. Thanks again.

I can testify to the value of the "rrshs"--I've found a number of historic depots and structures by using its store of information. I've even added some entries: Pacific Electric structures here in Southern California that have escaped the wrecking crews and (in most cases) gone on to useful "second careers".

Yes, I'll second that!

The Internet is growing so fast that nobody can even begin to find all of the web sites out there.

And then of course there are good old fashioned books.

The Arcadia folds have published Historic Stations of the Long Isalnd Railroad. And I bet they will do other lines as well.
