I am looking for photos of the ferry Hempstead, built by Harlan and Hollingsworth in Wilmington, DE in 1906, latter the (1921) Hackensack and the (1947) Islander operating at Woods Hole. I've googled it to death and can't seem to find anything. Does anyone have any ideas or photos to send me.

Since she ran for the Steamship Authority at Woods Hole, MA
they might have plans of their old boats? Or is that a different Islander?

Also, check and see if there are local historical societies for the places she ran, i.e. Woods Hole and ??? I would think that they would probably have pictures and perhaps articles or artifacts.

I got really excited for a minute thinking that was my ship. LIRR Hackensack (Hempstead) was sold in 1947, renamed Islander, and out of service by 1951. The Islander mentioned in the earlier thread was her replacement being built in 1950. My Islander was reportedly cut up in the early 50's.

Check the Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia. If anyone has a photo, it's them.

Here is another thought. did you check books like steel Rails To The Sunrise and others by Ron Zeal?

He has written several books on the Long Island Railroad.

both the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum and the Long Island ?railroad Museum are too new to have much in the way of Archives; but it is worth checking them out. They both have web sites.

Also the long running magazine Steamboat Bill from the Historical Society might have something.
