Oyster Bay RR Museum preserves ex-NH FA cab

Post subject:  Oyster Bay RR Museum preserves ex-NH FA cab
Salvaged from a wrecked New Haven FA1, this cab was painted up to represent the new LIRR scheme, during the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Long Island was in the process of trading its own C-Liner cabs to ALCO for C-420's, so a donor cab was sought. BTW, the paint scheme represented here was never applied to the LI FM cabs.

Post Fair, the cab went to a childrens daycare, where the usual happened. It was offered to the Oyster Bay group before it was to be scrapped, and they snapped it up and restored it for display.

Note in the picture, the divers from G5s #35 and a portion of their new P54 coach.

I have a friend of mine who, every time he saw a steam locomotive tender, would say "they saved the wrong end!" In this case, they at least saved "the right end!".

Folks,

I was back the in June and their yard looks pretty much like you see it in the picture.

It is only a short distance from the Oyster Bay Station building which show the recent work on the roof et cetra. It is nice to see the building without all the ads plastered all ofer it.

It would be nice to see that locomotive back in one piece. It has been apart for such a long time!

The cab is what remains of NH 0402, which had been traded on a NH C425 order.

I was told that the cab section was furnished in consideration of the then-current order for C420's. At the Fair, it wore the later style aluminum Alco Products builders'
plate.

Not the only loco cabs preserved thus, by a long shot:

Scroll down to the bottom of this pageand you'll find not one, but TWO such cabs owned by a loco preservation society in the UK. Yes, both were privately preserved in backyards at first. And I have no confirmation that the donations came about as a result of "either that thing goes or I do!" ultimatums..........

In the early 70s MK in Boise Idaho used the cab from an Alco RS-2 as a guard shack there is a photo of it one of the early X2200 Souths I also recall a model railroad store having the cab of a CN F-7A in the store
