Folks, I do not know much about the Steam Locomotive Replica that showed up in Wisconsin earlier this summer. There was one partial image of it in Railfan and Railroad perhaps i have missed something in another publication. This project is that certinly would be of interest to people who read what we say or write here. I gather the locomotive is a sister to the two replicas that they operate at Promontory National historic Site in Utah. So is the loco privately owned or a museum? Does it have a place to run on a regular basis or is it like the EUREKA running at special times and places? I know the wheels were cast and manufactured at the Strasbug Railroad shop in Pennsylvania. What about the boiler did they do it also? Thanks for your thoughts, Ted Miles |

The LEVIATHON is a privately built/privately owned locomotive. It is owned / built by an individual just because he wanted to build one. I'll leave the details to those who know more than I do. |

Well, for one thing, Leviathan spelled with an "A". :) Here's a link where you can see some construction photos: http://web.mac.com/vtlyon/iWeb/The%20Le ... an%20.html |

Thank you all for the most interesting answers! There are not one but two new standard gauge steam locomotive replicas happening: Leviathan and the V & T Lyon. I sure hope the Lyon gets to operate on the newly extended V&T when it is finished! I sure aim to take a ride on the newly built rails next month! Ted Miles |

Castings for the Leviathan replica were all made in Utah foundries. All of the patterns are owned by the National Park Service and were/are kept in Utah. If memory serves me, I believe the drivers were machined and quartered in Colorado. Most of the rest of the machining and construction was done in the Chicago area, where the owner/builder and locomotive reside. It has not run in Wisconsin yet. I think you are confusing Wisconsin with Michigan. So far the only runs have been in Michigan (public debut at Trainfestival 2009) and Illinois (some initial shakedown runs and at Monticello Railway Museum last weekend). |
