Here are a couple that came through on Flickr. Same engine looking very different. Note she has a Belpaire firebox. I assume she is a sister to 1551 at Ohio Central and 1533 at New Hope. I wonder about the firebox, were the other changed?

Tom,
I have listed a link below to a CN steam roster that might be of some help. It appears that the three locomotives were clustered together in the 1500 series during a 1955/56 renumbering. You have to be careful using the roster as original locomotives which carried these number were scrapped or disposed of relatively early on.

H6-b 1521 was originally 1274 built in 1905.
H6-d 1533 was originally 1324 built in 1910.
H6-g 1551 was originally 1354 built in 1912-13.

Note the inward canted cylinders on 1521 whereas 1533 and 1551 did not share this trait with her either. I hope this helps.

All three still exist today.

Don -

At least one other CN Ten-Wheeler from this group also survives. H6-g #1395 is located on the Coopersville & Marne Railway in Michigan. Apparently the Canadian National didn't need that high of a number from that series for their new diesels, so it was never renumbered. Although the engine is on the C&MR, it is privately owned and is in pretty bad shape the last I heard. Too bad, as this engine is a nice size for tourist/museum operations. Perhaps the 4-6-0 has some serious problems though.

Two more survive.

H-6-c #1531 (nee 1322) survives in Barrie, Ontario. It was just recently relocated nearby....

H-6-g #1392 (I don't believe it ever carried a 1500 series number) is kept in operating condition at the Alberta Railway Museum.....

Who has plans for one of these locomotives? Possible rebuild coming up fairly soon on one which is static at present.

I had requested plans in an earlier thread, I contacted Exporail (thanks for the advice), but was told the class I requested was constructed in Schenectady, although all the rosters I've seen say "MLW". Can anyone verify this?
Thanks!

Are the #89 at Strasburg and the #91 at Middletown and Hummelstown from the same class? Both were re-numbered as well.

Chris.

Chris, those are 2-6-0 Moguls, whereas the locomotives we are asking about are 4-6-0 Ten Wheelers. These locomotive were built either at MLW or Schenectady.

Of the various subclasses of CN H-6 Ten-Wheelers, all of the survivors still existing today were built by the Montreal Locomotive Works. A few of these H-6's were built by other than MLW, but none at the Schenectady plant of ALCO. Hope that clarifies things.

Thanks Les. Could the "other" be CLC, who later built Fairbanks Morse diesel designs?

The Archives of MLW are at Exporail in Delson, Quebec just south of Montreal. If anyone would have them, they would...

Trainspot -

Unfortunately, no. The "other" builder of H-6's for the CN was the Brooks plant of ALCO which built H-6a numbers 1261-1267 and H-6e numbers 1343-1346. The H-6a's were all off CN's roster by 1945 and the H-6e's by 1944. CLC did however build some 4-6-0's for Canadian National including classes H-4a, H-4b, H-8a, H-10a and also some G class Ten-Wheelers. I am not sure if any of these still survive.
