Can anyone tell me if there are any Prairie type locomotives preserved a.) operational b.) static in California? or even in the Western U.S?

There are several A.T.& S.F. 2-6-2 types. However, the first one that comes to mind is the Santa Fe 1010 at CSRM in Sacramento, Ca.

The Pacific Locomotive Association (http://www.ncry.org/) has 3 of them. Qunicy #2, Robert Dollar #3 and Howard Terminal #30 (Sierra Railway #30). Both the #2 and #3 are undergoing heavy overhaul but the #2 should be back in service this summer.

The 2-6-2T listed under Snoqualmie is ex- Port of Olympia #2 and is either at Mt. Rainier Scenic or California now. Skagit River Railway #6 is still at Newhalem off of Hwy. 20.

Kevin,
When did the "vandals" remove a set of drivers out from under ex-CB&Q #4994? Last thing I knew, she was still a 2-8-2 like the #4963 at Union, IL.

Orange Empire Railway Museum has operational 2-6-2 Prairie type number 2 former Ventura County Railroad built by Baldwin in 1922. I worked on this lokie in the early 80's in its first restoration to operation. Not sure but last time I heard, it may be down for FRA work.

The PoO 2 is now lettered "Mason County Logging Co. 7" and was trucked back to Willits CA after it's restoration at the Mt. Rainier Scenic RR's shops last year.

There are photos of the #7 taken at last year's steam up on my website with the also newly restored 2-truck Heisler, Curtis Lumber Co #2 (formerly known as Vancouver Plywood #2).

The #2 sat for years at Jack Roger's museum at Ashford. It was restored in parallel with the #7 and is also privately owned. It is currently at Mineral.

Serious consideration was given to restoring Rayonier 2-6-2 #45 to operation this year, but the decision was made to start work on Rayonier 2-8-2 #70 instead.

Yep, it's down for FRA work. Length of time will depend on the combination of resources -- funds for paid contractors and volunteers to do the work if we don't raise enough funds. Probably will be some combination in between.

We had a contractor remove the flues. And the engine is inside to get the non-A insulation removed so that the exterior of the boiler can be inspected.

This locomtive was moved to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City (along with most of the "old" Heber Creeper equipment) about 8 years ago.

McCloud River went for prairies in a big way, eventually purchasing nine of them, five from Baldwin (4,8,9,10,and 11) and four from Alco (22,23,24,25). Three of these are preserved, two of them out west. The #9 operated until last year on the Kettle Moraine Scenic in Wisconsin. Haven't heard a definative disposition for that locomovtive. #9's twin, #8, is sitting on a pedastal at Ione, CA, with "Iron Ivan" on it. Both locomotives left McCloud in the 1930's. The #8 went to the Amador Central, where it served until retirement. The #9 went to the Yreka Western, then to the Amador Central, then to the Nezperce & Idaho, then to Mid-Continental museum in North Freedom, WI, then to Kettle Moraine.

The #25 was the last steamer on the McCloud. It's last fling before retirement was the excursions marking the completion and opening of the Burney extension in 1955. It came back to life about 1963 and operated in and out of excursion service until 1986. The new McCloud Railway bought the locomotive and had it back up and running by 1997. Heard that it failed a boiler inspection last year, and that the shop crews at McCloud were going to put off working on the locomotive until this past winter. Have heard nothing if it will be operated at all this coming summer (the road does have several steam excursions posted on their website, but they have been relying almost exclusively on 2-8-2 #18 for about a year now).

The Industrial 2-6-2 listed as being at Arcata/Eureka is the former Pacific Lumber #29. PALCO retired the locomotive after putting a significant amount of work into it. The machine spent a decade or two in the protection of the enginehouse at Samoa. PALCO donated the locomotive to the Northern Counties Logging Interpretive Association, a non-profit auxilary of the California State Park System, about 1986. The locomotive was stored for a while at the former Northwestern Pacific shops in Eureka while NCLIA and the bankrupt Eureka Southern railroad fought it out over transportation arrangements. Eventually the Eureka Southern agreed to move the locomotive and some log cars that PALCO also donated/sold to NCLIA from Eureka to the NCLIA storage yard at Glendale (east of Arcata, west of Blue Lake). The NCLIA storage yard is located on a former lumber yard parcel currently owned by Simpson Timber. Access to the yard was provided by the old Arcata & Mad River Railroad, which the Eureka Southern had purchased, re-habilitated, and was operating at the time. Shortly after the #29 was moved in several weakened bridges and a general lack of repair funds forced the EUKA to shut down the old Arcata & Mad River, and successor North Coast Railroad scrapped the A&MR trackage to help pay some bills about five years ago, leaving the #29 and a bunch of other NCLIA equipment stranded. Other locomotives at the site include a 3-truck Shay and a 2-8-2, both former Hammond Lumber: Arcata & Mad River 2-Truck shay #7; Bear Harbor Lumber 2-4-2T #2; a privately owned 2-truck Heisler; and a diesel built of the frame of a scrapped 2-truck Heisler. The storage site is generally not available to the public, mostly due to the Simpson ownership and other liability concerns (NCLIA members have to sign releases to get into the site). NCLIA started a fundraising campaign a few years back to get restore the #29. The group may get the former Hammond shop building in Samoa, and that would provide some much-needed protection for the equipment (the climate has not been nice to any of the locomotives at the site). Currently the NCLIA is deeply involved with many efforts underway in the area that eventually may lead to the establishment of a timber technology museum in the Eureka area, complete with steam-powered excursion trains on the old Northwestern Pacific/Eureka Southern/North Coast/Northwestern Pacific trackage around Humboldt Bay.

One of my "Surviving World Steam Locomotive" users obtained access to the site to take photographs for my database. He took pictures of most of the locomotives mentioned above (including the diesel conversion).

The program CD-ROM contains a picture of Bear Harbor 2-4-2T #2, and most of the other pictures were released in subsequent updates.

While none are great looking (the Bear Harbor engine is worst, not much more than a boiler shell and chassis), most are in decent shape; better than some other "preserved" locomotives I have seen. It will be great if they can moved from their current landlocked location, and placed under cover.
