I was just reading on the trainorder's board about the repainting of the 4449 to Red, White and Blue. Smokebox made mention of "Let's Roll". I do hope that Doyle and the Crew can find a prominent place to add the words "Let's Roll" on the 4449. God Bless the USA.

If we have time, we'd like to "dress up" the aux tender. As it is, we have 9 days till the trip, the tender has several hundred rivets to be prepped, and three colors to apply.

We hope to put some kind of slogan on the aux, maybe a different one for each side. "Let's Roll" has a nice double meaning if I say so myself. I guess I should ask "The Boss" as to what his ideas are. If we only had one more week, or at least better weather!

Smokebox:

Where did the second tender come from? Was it a part of the "original" AFT consist? Was it on display somewhere prior to your acquiring it?

Sorry so many questions.

Scott:

While I am not smokebox, I can answer the question. The aux tender for the 4449 is a former Cab Forward tender that has been altered. The most noticeable difference is that the oil tank has been completely removed and the entire top is the same level. Also, the top edge is rounded like the 49Â’s tender. This tender was not with ATF 4449. I believe it was built for the 1984 WorldÂ’s Fair trip.

Brandon's answer was correct. The old oil bunker location is now where we store oil, soaps, and other items we use on the road. The tender has been converted to roller bearings (friction box covers are still attached), and a diesel MU line and boxes has been run.

AHA! We were wondering if you could convert to rollers and still leave the "lids on" ! Thanks

Yes, just make sure you cut in some ventilation holes in the bottom box area. We had one guy, who's not a big 4449 fan, come up to the aux tender after one of our fast runs just to smell how hot our boxes were. All I could do is laugh, as he had no idea the trucks had been converted. Maybe next time I'll lift a lid for him!
