Gentlemen,

Aside from being active at a museum where live
steam is used, what other methods could a person
use in order to learn the fine art of firing and running
a steam locomotive? I have heard of various rather
pricey short courses offered at a few places from time
to time. I have, for years been involved with electric
railways, and would like to make the transition to
steam before I get too old to shovel coal.

I really would like to learn how to properly fire
a steam locomotive. Forgive me if this post is
slightly off topic.

If a locomotive isn't available, try befriending some folks involved with steam traction engines. The mechanics of running and firing are the same, only the type of application. Once you master the traction/or portable steam engine, then transition to a locomotive is easier. If you've had experience with train handling with electric or diesel, then simply "marry" the two disciplines together to get a good start. It is most effective to learn to operate/fire under load, such as a sawmill.
