Saw this come through on my rss feed. Does anyone know what is going to happen to the old bridge?

Most of the "New" bridge is a old bridge from the Milwaukee Road. It was moved up to Boone Yard then taken out to the site and put together. The old bridge is fenced off and I'm told by local railroaders will remain for 5 years. Then what? There are some new curves to the new right a way to the new bridge. Unless you have a Tilt train. I don't know what the Max speed on them is.

I think that if someone can alleviate UP's liability concerns the bridge may continue to stand forever. Could it become a state park such as what was done with Kinzua bridge?

The original wooden bridge was located quite a bit south of this location. In this aerial, the original bridge piers can still be seen. The bridge over the stream to the right is what collapsed under the weight of the freight train. The Shelley farm was located between both bridges. Kate headed west over the high bridge to the station in the town just to the left of this photo. If you follow the river going north you will find the 1901 Kate Shelley bridge.

So they actually took an old bridge apart and put it on new piers? How is that for preservation. Maybe the old bridge can be turned into a public walkway like they are doing with the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge in New York. I know the Salisbury Viaduct on the old WM attracts a lot of people who simple walk out and back without using much of the trail.
