I thought you guys might be able to help me out with a project. Does anyone have a photo of a wooden Bangor and Aroostook refrigerator car, with the "Maine Potatoes" logo on the side? Furthermore, were any of these ever painted in the red, white, and blue scheme, or always in reefer yellow?

I would hope that the model is authentic and that someone could come up with a prototype photo for Richard to verify it. Because a refrigerator car painted in this scheme sure would look great on a vintage photo freight train!

I'll have to check the book at home tonight, but I seem to recall a photo of one of these cars in the book on AC&F boxcars. Could be wrong, but I'll check for you.

Thank you, everyone who responded. This is actually for a 1/8th scale, live steam model. I want to make this as authentic as possible. I Googled the subject and came up with two H-O scale freight cars, but as pointed out buy a contributor, I can't be certain they are authentic. I figured the "rivet counters" will know truth from fabrication. Thanks, guys!

I drew snake eyes. I'm sure I have seen a photo of a car (not a model) with that paint scheme but the 4 books and the BAR 75th Anniversary Annual Report I looked through did not turn up that photo. Sorry.

And why, you might ask, would a guy in SW Georgia have any interest, much less any published resources, pertaining to a Maine railroad? I was born at Loring AFB (my dad was a SAC B-52 pilot), so Maine hold a special place for me. But don't tell any of my friends! :>)

History tells us the South had plenty of its agents up here at one time! But, letting bygones be bygones, you're welcome back anytime, after all, what's a little family disagreement? I can fined plenty of photos of the boxcars, but it's a wooden reefer I'm looking for. I appreciate your efforts, and thank you (y'all). If anyone comes across other references, I'd really appreciate knowing about it.

Just as a reference for those who might be interested, the red, white, and blue paint on the model freight car, with the link given by Stephen Hussar, above, is an accurate rendition of the actual scheme. Another hobbyist sent me a scan of the real car, albeit a b&w scan, this weekend. I can not attach it here, as it is a copywritten image, but the car you see in the model is nearly exact.
The original cars were purchased used from MDT for the potato harvests of the late 1940's. They were in tough shape then, but demand warranted the outlay. The wood sheathed cars lasted into the mid-1950's when they were retired and replaced with yellow steel mechanical reefers.
After the potato business shifted to Idaho, and the blight so deeply wounded the farmers, the tremendous number of mechanical refrigerators were surplus. Most were cut up as scrap, but all over the state, one can still see old BAR steel reefers being used as sheds, barns, shelters, and storage.

I just thought you might want to know.

Many of the MDT wood reefers had the carbody removed from the frame and the fishbelly-centersill underframe and MDT/NYCL trucks were used by BAR to build those long cabooses with the side doors, that were so typical of the road in the 50s, 60s, 70s..

BAR C-67 is at NAUG, and the trucks are marked "NYCL".
