it still lives on, for now at least in Monroe GA At the RTEX locomotive facility there. This was the last Unpatched SP SD40T-2 in service on the UP roster. Was retired sometime in 2008. and has now ended up here.

it would be great if this one could be saved.

Have any tunnel motors been preserved?

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

My notes show SP SD45T-2 6819 (originally SP 9193) at the California State Railway Museum. I'll leave it to others to debate whether or not its presence there actually constitutes "preservation," given the somewhat dubious status of the former AT&SF diesel collection there.

That's the only one I can find so far. Many of the other "tunnel motors" ended up on the secondhand market and were picked up by B&LE (later CN), Ohio Central, Buffalo & Pittsburgh, NYS&W, and others.

UP donated D&RGW SD40T-2 5371 to the Utah state RR museum in August 2009:

5371 was never "patched" by UP before she was donated to the museum!
(the only D&RGW unit that was never patched by UP)
So she is in her original paint today..

So thats two tunnel motors preserved so far..
