Those locos were big-time dogs. One is preserved by CRHA at Delson, PQ.

The LRCs are what you get when you mix nationalist politics, international politics, and a debate over passenger service all into one project. When given the choice to purchase off-the-shelf technology, such as EMD's F40, or Pullman's Amfleet, the Canadian government instead elected to round up a large consortium of Canadian universities, manufacturers, designers, to create the train of the future that would not only save passenger service in Canada but would do so in the U.S. as well. The result was an only-a-mother-can-love oddball that underwhelmed on just about every count. Very similar to other futuristic projects in the U.S. - such as the Aerotrain, Turbotrain, SPV, etc., but happend 15 years later.

In a close parallel to earlier U.S. projects such as the Metroliner, after considerable early problems, and many, many retrofits and updates, the LRC engines did run for 10-15 years before finally being put out for good earlier in the decade. I am surprised one was saved - efforts to save any of them never garnered much interest. They are basically the last product from the old MLW, which does give them some history. The coaches, again after many fixes and upgrades, still do operate today.

Chris.
