An important meeting is coming up on April 2nd and a good turnout is needed. This letter was sent out today by Richmond, Ca. City Councilman Tom Butt:

-------------------------------------

About a month ago, representatives of the City, BNSF and the CPUC met at Assemblywoman Aroner's office in Richmond to discuss a resolution of the WigWag crisis.

It became apparent that a number of legal and procedural issues may turn on documents perhaps in possession of BNSF and the CPUC, as well as legal opinions by CPUC staff. CPUC staff stated that they needed about two weeks to complete their legal analysis. It was agreed that CPUC would complete their legal analysis and that both CPUC and BNSF would produce pertinent documents in their files. All material would be forwarded to Mayor Anderson's office for distribution to interested parties.

Currently, Mayor Anderson has told me that she has received nothing form anyone.

Meanwhile, the City Council is supposed to have on the March 19 Agenda a resolution to hold a public hearing on April 2 to consider adding the WigWag to the Richmond Historic Register.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO ANYBODY YOU KNOW WHO IS INTERESTED IN THE WIGWAGS.

I never thought I would see the day that we would have a wig wag "crisis".

From the pic it looks like the wig wags are in the median of the road. Can't modern protection be added on the shoulders following standard practice andjust leave the wig wags wired in as well? Or is that too logical of a solution?

The "crisis" is actually in the minds of the Point Richmond residents and merchants.
They consider the wigwags to be an important part of their small town image. Check out the city poster (attached below)... look closely to the right of the picture.

The CPUC has never approved wigwags mixed with modern devices in the past. When a crossing is upgraded, everything must conform to the current standards. Wigwags are not considered "fail-safe", therefore they do not comform. If they allow the wigwags to stay even if gates are installed, this will be a first. That's what we are hoping for. May be a long shot though...
