I was just looking at some photos of the Conway Scenic Railroad roundhouse in North Conway, New Hampshire. Got to wondering how many other standard gauge wood roundhouses are still around. I know that some brick sided roundhouses are still out there (in various states of repair) but they wouldn't count in this survey. Also, no enginehouses (square walls without "round" ends). Some rough info including original railroad, number of stalls and present status would be nice. Or is the one in North Conway the only one still existing? Les |

Speaking only for California... The Sierra Railroad roundhouse at Jamestown California is intact, preserved, active, and owned by California State Parks as part of Railtown 1897. The Timber Heritage Association has a lease on the Vance/Hammond lumber round house at Samoa California (near Eureka). We just lost the Colusa and Lake (narrow gauge) wooden roundhouse (really more like a couple of rectangular buildings set at angles with a common roof) this year. |

If I recall correctly the Leadville, Colorado, & Southern roundhouse in Leadville, CO is wood framed. It was origionally clad in iron sheeting. Not sure what's on it today. Originally an 8 stall narrow gauge Colorado & Southern roundhouse, it had 2 stalls removed by 1936 and three more were removed around 1943 and the doors enlarged to accomodate std gauge. Bill |

There is infact a second round house on the Conway Scenic at Bartlett. Its not used but intact. It was used for the banking locos up through Crawfords notch. The atmospher in the Conway house is incredible and some of the pictures I took there are timeless! |

Has anyone ever assembled a database of remaining roundhouses, wood, brick or concrete? |
