The tamper, known as Big Joe, is a totally home-made and engineered machine. Its based on a battery-powered industrial forklift to lift the tamping heads, which are commercially available pneumatic tampers. The most recent modifications provide for pneumatic squeezing of the ballast. The unit is not self-propelled, requiring the services of two or three volunteers to push it along. But it beats the heck out of bar or shovel tamping.
