The locomotive, shown below in a John Gramling photograph:

Image

Has long been somewhat garishly displayed at Church Street Station, in Orlando, Florida. I just chatted with an individual from a trucking company who had been asked to provide a quote for hauling the locomotive to "somewhere in the Kansas City" area. He wanted weights and dimensions, and I was happy to provide them. He indicated that the locomotive had been "donated to some organization" but he didn't know which one.

So does anybody else have any information about this move?

Regards,
Doug

Doug -

One of our members had recently seen the locomotive offered through Ozark Mountain Railcar with an asking price of $35K. An interesting turn of events if, in fact, the locomotive has indeed been donated to some organization.

Incidentally, the 3749 was the last Frisco steam locomotive still on the active SLSF roster, to run in regular sevice. She was leased to the Alabama State Prison in Atmore, Alabama and served there until the Fall of 1956.

I hope whoever gets her gets rid of the circus train garb and restores her to her Frisco appearance. I can provide photos.

As the owner of Ozark Mountain Railcar I can kill the rumor now that the unit has been donated!

I'm sorry I did not know I had a typo, the unit has NOT been donated. Sorry again!

Mr. Suscheck -

Thanks very much for the current status. I found a photo of sister 0-6-0 #3748 as it appeared when in active service on the Frisco:

Quite a contrast compared to how #3749 appears these days.

Here's a shot of the 3749 in service at Atmore, AL for the prison in 1954. The "Coonskin" number plate is gone.

And check the "black cat" on the smokebox front! Wonder if that was a Frisco addition, or from someone at the prison?

Yeah, Les, I noticed the black cat also. Took me a minute to determine if I was actually seeing what I thought I was, but your post confirmed I wasn't completely nutty. Notice the number "13" on the cat. Interesting story there...
