The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) designates "World Heritage Sites". I just saw a story about the Matheran Light Railway in India for its possible inclusion in the list of World Heritage Sites.

It got me wondering how many railways have this designation. A quick check on the web revealed four.

None are in the North America. This has me wondering: Do we have a worthy candidate here? When the rubber hits the road is this designation something that would be helpful? Is it worth the effort? Has anyone looked into this before?

Just some food for thought.

Mt. Washington would have been a candidate before they tossed its heritage.

Actually there are only 3 as one is a trans-boundary listing.

Agreed about Mt. Washington. Thinking about others; EBT, Cumbres, Horseshoe Curve, and Mt Clare come to mind.
