Whats the device mounted to the pilot hovering over the lead axle?

I believe that is a drive unit for a speedometer.

Probably the 1955 version ofa GPS receiver? :-)

Correst as usual, J. David. It was still there until I removed it in 1986 during the first overhaul. I cannot remember if it was put back. I don't think so, because we installed a drive unit on the first axle of the tender for an electric speedometer later that year.
