One of my favorite old-building finds came a couple years ago while walking with the family on the streets approaching the Fulton Street Seaport museum. I spotted an impossibly-ornate office building of about five stories jammed in between two giant modern office towers. It was closed and obviously waiting for redevelopment. On the lintel over the doors, it said, "Kueffel and Esser." The kids didn't understand why I exclaimed over it.

My grandfather presented me with a K&E Polyphase slide rule when I was heading off to college. It came in a beautiful hard leather case. To keep this RPN related, think about all the engineering calculations done by railroad engineers with these instruments.

In my first year of college @ Penn State 1980 , I was an engineering major, the calc teacher tried desperately to get us to use a slide rule as a fallback technology, with the obvious injunction that it didn't require batteries.

I wish I did, it still would've been a lot more useful than the FORTRAN programming (on punchcards no less) that was Comp Sci 101; and far better use of my time than about 15 megaclass electives.
