I noted the news item (in Flimsies) about the town of Deadwood, SD putting their ex-CB&Q/BN engine house up for sale. This is the same building the Deadwood Central tourist railroad used around 1988 to house their 0-4-0T, and if I remember correctly, it's a one stall, wooden structure (however, I was my understanding that it was built in 1921, not 1930). It was in pretty rough condition when I viewed it in 1993, but apparently it's been restored since then. At that time the rails were still in place, mothballed after the DC quit running, from the yard to a point about four miles out of town; the turntable had been removed and sold to the Black Hills Central. Anyone know if the rails are still in place today? This building would make for an excellent local railroad museum. In the 1980s it was used to house the local switch power, BN SW1 91, which later went to Kansas City Power & Light at Montrose, Missouri. If it still exists, it would make for a nice indoor display. |

I was there about four weeks ago. No rails or action around the area. |
